Can we have a guilt free carb loaded meal and still control calories?
Phaseolin is a metabolite extracted from white kidney beans. The extraction retains the active component phaseolin and removes toxic substances. Phaseolin has a variety of pharmacological effects such as inhibition of digestive enzymes and potential anticancer effects.
The term carbohydrates refers to all sugars including starch and soluble/insoluble fibre. Carbohydrates play an important role in obesity Dietary fibre is not digestible in the small-intestine. Starch in the diet gets digested in the small intestine and increases blood sugar levels. It was found that taking phaseolin could block up to 66% of the absorption of starch. Phaseolin can effectively block the activity of the digestive enzyme amylase, which in turn will lose its ability to digest starch and any digestible sugars that are available for digestion in small intestine. This controls the digestion and absorption of digestible carbohydrates in the small intestine. The carbohydrate products that cannot be digested in the small intestine will then enter the large intestine. They will be fermented by colonic bacteria into short-chain fatty acids that serve as fuel for healthy gut bacteria (probiotics) growth that enhances gastrointestinal health. So phaseolin works to control obesity by inhibiting carbohydrate absorption, but can also by keeping the gut healthy during a weight management program.
